I read it a long time ago, so my memory of it could be a bit grainy.

From what I remember, it starts off with the point of view of aliens, watching mankind from a far, light years probably. They see our destructive tendencies and decide that they must stop us before it is too late. They build a weapon, a massive projectile that accelerates to very near the speed of light and send it on it's way toward us. Then they see us changing our ways, and they regret sending the weapon, but it is too late for them to do anything about it. It collides with Earth and decimates the population. The ones that are left vow revenge on those who did this and know which star they in habit.

It was so long ago that some of these details may be off. I realize that this isn't /r/, so I give you another piece of fine literature that you might enjoy
