Don't recommend Nietzsche.

I couldn't find the exact picture I had in mind, but this is the feel I'm searching for: A man who stands alone, with his back turned to the world, in pursuit of wisdom and knowledge and greater things. Someone who lives in the world but is not of it, someone who loves people but does not crave their love, someone who does not concern themselves with the trivialities that others worry about, someone who cannot be distracted from the greater cause of their existence.

To answer endgame questions like...
Why is there something instead of nothing?
What does it mean to be good?
Do we have any real agency, or are we puppets?
Does God exist?
What does it mean to be?
What comes after death?
What is the limit to what we can perceive?
What is the limit to what we can know, if we can even know?
What is math?
What is beyond the reach of science?
Is life intrinsically meaningful, and why?
And so on.
Not one person on the website has any of these answers.

The truth is that there is no truth you have ever professed on this site which is actually true. You tell us to read Deleuze, Nietzsche, Hegel, and Wittgenstein, but you lack understanding yourselves. You root your belief in the works of others without creating your own. So instead of the struggle you find consolation in the inaccurate. You do not know the end, and though some day you might, it is currently out of your reach.

Having a schema in greek and medieval philosophy, how should I work up to Heidegger and the contemporary continental dialogue? I'm in an analytic university, and I see value in jumping the gap.

BE EMBODIED BY THE ETERNAL, DENY THE EPHEMERAL. ONLY THEN WILL YOU HAVE THE VIGOR TO CONTINUE ON. SUSTAIN YOUR BODY, BUT DO NOT FALL PREY TO TEMPORARY PLEASURES. REALIZE THAT YOU ARE NOTHING, AND THAT ALL THAT SURROUNDS YOU IS THE SUBSTANCE OF ALL THAT YOU ARE AND EVER WILL BE.

Because some men dream of sitting on mountaintops, while others are content living in the valley of the mountain's shadow. Guess which one you are anon.

To what end is the pursuit of contemporary philosophy? Platonic and Christian philosophy may be ends if of themselves, but I don't understand why one would want to pursue a philosophy that is cold and dead. If at the end of the day the truth that one believes is that there is no real purpose in understanding the world, then why do it? One of the only reasons that I currently see is so that one doesn't become the prey of another's interests. Has the pursuit of Truth become more about application than the theories in question?

Why am I not yet convinced to relieve myself of material pleasures after reading Augustine, Plato, Buddist literature, and the neoplatonists? I've been trying to avoid nicotine and sexual desire, but I'm not yet at the point where I can have faith in doing so. Thus I relapse and starting telling myself things like "nicotine is a nootropic, it will help your studies" or something else to climb back on the addiction train. Who can actually convince me, if I indeed ought to be convinced?

What books are about the endless search for truth and virtue, but end in the character realizing that they will probably never find it?

What theories of mind have a static, unmoving point of experience as the center of what we are. By that I mean the senses and imaginative part of us feed information to this point. This experiencing part of us can't change or in itself computationally do anything, but it is always present in order for us to "live". In this theory, the body and mental processes might be physically determined, but the experience isn't. I'm a sense it is just along for the ride. To use Plato's chariot analogy, the body is the charioteer and the experience is a passenger.

ITT: we post overused book covers

If a philosophy book exists and is modern (19th-20th century), then there it probably has had this cover.

What books would you suggest for someone trying to become a more well rounded polymath, to open the mind and expand horizons? I've always been a deep reader since I was younger but I feel a certain emptiness inside when it comes to good literature. It's been a while since something I've read really stuck with me and taught me something.

So please lit, give me your book/poetry/literature suggestions that can contribute to my thirst for knowledge

I read the wiki and gathered some information, but not enough.

What order of books would YOU personally recommend if you were trying to change someone from being a pleb? Like, I've read 20-30 total books in my life pleb?

How can I conquer my spirit? There's literature about this? To be aware of my expectatives and act in a way I can fulfill them?

Anyways, I will found out if I could pull it off, or not, in about a month.
