I'm doing it lads.

Through an immense stroke of fortune im in a position to purchase a small piece of land and an old cottage. I am located somewhere in western Europe.

My plan is to slowly reduce my need for employment by producing and selling various things on the land: eggs, honey, crafts, etc. I will also produce a decent bit of my own food.

Please recommend books, both practical and philosophical/abstract regarding self sufficiency, "dropping out", exiting modernity, living off of the land, "alternative lifestyles", etc.

I'm interesting in both fiction and non fiction.

Our family dog died today. He had a stroke, and died quickly after having spend a nice day outdoors. I feel bad, obviously, and I'm going to miss him. He was a very good boy.
That being said, I feel validated in my life choices. Focus on yourself. Any person that you may grow attached to over some extended period of time will, in one way or another, leave you, either through death or through separation.
This doesn't mean that you should be alone, necessarily. But keeping your emotional distance is always good; in every interaction with another, remind yourself that this person, or animal, will die one day, and often times painfully too. Maybe this is Stoicuckery. But it makes everything a lot easier, at least for me.
I hope you anons are having a better evening than I am. Thanks for all the laughs, and the often times good book reccs over the years.

>How do I get started with Buddhism?
Read the suttas first, WITHOUT any interpretations /explanations, and allow that to inform your own judgments of the various third hand teachings available. Always check back to the suttas when evaluating your practice and the various modern teachings.

P. S. "In the buddhas words" is probably a pretty bad introduction in my opinion. Literally just start reading suttas. It's not hard

P. P. S. Most commentarial teachings should be considered "wrong" or at least misguided.

Start with the suttas

Start with the suttas

Politics is the new religion, the sooner you realise this the sooner you can group them with the bible thumpers and ignore what they have to say
