I've been very interested in the German WW2 soldier's perspective lately after reading "D Day Through German Eyes", which is almost certainly a work of fiction pretending to be history (still good, though). I haven't read them yet, but I ordered the following:

>Tigers in the Mud - Otto Carius
One of two major (400+ page) autobiographies by Panzer Commanders in WW2. Supposed to be nonpolitical and unapologetic for the soldiering done. My dad also gave me "Panzer Battles" by Maj. Gen. F.W. von Mellenthin, which I think is the more well known work. Both are supposedly great.

>The Eastern Front - Leon Degrelle
Leon Degrelle was a french political activist, and volunteer for the Waffen SS. He saw a lot of combat, as well as had personal relationships with the NSDP authority figures. His work is apparently very political, unapologetic, and "revisionist". He's also written some well sourced works of history, like "Hitler: Born at Versailles" covering WW1 and how its events led to WW2. Excited to get into this.

>Hitler's Commando: the Daring Missions of Otto Skorzeny and the Nazi Special Forces - Otto Skorzeny
This is not the book I meant to order, but it's probably still decent. As I understand, It's an abridgement of "My Commando Operations". Skorzeny was a notorious warrior for the Third Reich, again apologizing for nothing later on, though I hear he was pinched into doing a job for Mossad after the war. In any case he has a lot of crazy stories to tell as special ops soldier.

I've also read half of "Five Years, Four Fronts" by George Grosjohann. It's pretty meh. I like guy himself, and agree with many of his views, but he doesn't go into much detail about has battle experiences, copping out with vague recollections of it being terrible. Dull read so far.

All of Irving's stuff highly readable and well sourced. People are fools to reject him over the mainstream reporting on him. Currently going through "Churchill's War - The Struggle for Power", which I've already read once, but didn't fully comprehend. Taking it slower this time, and writing notes to aid in retention.

Did 50 of "Five Years, Four Fronts" today. It's good. Grossjohann is unapologetic about his time as an officer, and seems to have been hard as nails, but with a good sense of humor.
