Why does this book have a chapter every 2 pages?
What did you think of the book?

Personally I did not find the book resonated with me however it is a book that I will remember and there is a lot within it to think about. The book exists for a reason and the author had something to say that should be heard.
Much prefer later (modern) Japanese lit.
I am ignorant by far so please correct me but was this book innovative for it's subject matter in jp lit and influenced dazai and mishima or is a lot of earlier japanese authors melancholic in general.

I'm not gonna lie, this book dragged a bit in the 1st 2 parts, but when it switched to Sensei's POV for the last half I could not stop reading. I went in blind and was expecting more of a focused story, but reading about Sensei and K's relationship was excellent and pretty relatable, especially when he talks about knowingly feeling two opposite ways at the same time. I was reading about people's interpretations of the ending, and to me it seemed like the reason he did it was less about making it up to K and following his emperor then it was about preserving his wife's image of him and taking the easy way out. Anyone have some interesting takes on why he did it?

Read pic related last winter, thoroughly enjoyed, probably going to check out more of the author's work and other contemporary stuff. Something about the plain, somber prose really does it for me.

I finished First Snow on Fuji, Kokoro, and I am a Cat over the holidays. I had never really read any eastern literature until then but I've really enjoyed these.

Do you all have some favorites? Where should I go next?
