I want to get into reading. I've always been pretty good at English in school, but I actually want to dedicate some free time to reading now. Does anyone have list that anyone new to reading should read? Like the essentials?

I might as well include it here, but the /lit/ wiki linked in the sticky has plenty of charts for different authors, styles, time periods, countries etc. Not everyone likes every book, so read around a bit to figure out what you like first.

I would recommend just having the 'start with the greeks' and pic related in the sticky, if the goal is to help newfags find where to start.

Any of pic related will be a good place to start if you just want to get a book under your belt (Except for Fahrenheit 451 because it sucks ass).
Dostoevsky is also great if you think you're up for it. I'd go with either Crime and Punishment or The Brothers Karamazov, but they're long.

Post /lit/ reading charts. Doesn't matter what the subject is I just want to see what /lit/ has to offer.

making and discussing good entry level charts. i know its always been 4chan's schtick to be like an elitist little club, but you gotta have a good way for interested people to get into literature. "start with the greeks" is a meme for a reason because its a terrible way to start and it can put a lot of people off.
picrel is still the standard /lit/ starterkit on the /lit/ wiki in the sticky. should that shit be updated? improved? havent seen anyone discuss this kinda shit.

yea maybe if youre still learning the language dont try to read literature even native speakers tend to have trouble with. try picking up some good sci-fi books: they tend to be relatively short, have relatively simple prose, but can have some great ideas. can highly recommend Philip K Dick. /lit/ starterkit is pretty good too

Ignore the troll comments, please. You're going to want to start with some of the books on the /lit/ starter kit. They're on the easier side, but still fantastic and well worth reading. I recommend starting with 1984 or Brave New World, personally. If you find they're too difficult, maybe take a step back and read Harry Potter.

You could also just check the sticky (why does nobody read the sticky) and go to the /lit/wiki. There you would find this starter kit.
It gets criticised a lot for being high school lit, but the books are short, engaging, easy enough to understand and have at least some depth, particularly if compared to genre fiction.
You don't need to read every book listed here. Just read a couple and figure out what you enjoy.

I'm an ADHD peabrain who can't finish the book (the last one I "finished" was Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire like 10 years ago) so I've taken it upon myself to become well-read. Now that I'm on medication I can finish things, and so for therapy I need to train my brain by reading.

I've seen this list floating around, and I was wondering which order I should read them in? I know it seems weird but order is really important for me, so could someone list which ones should I read in order (and maybe why?)

Please don't judge lol I'm already embarrassed enough. Thank you <3
