Yeah yeah everybody gets it, a pampered fat-fuck wearing a cape can understand the suffering- and therefore thinks they have the right to judge- a person who, lets say, was horrifically abused as a minor; oppressed as an adult; and/or developed a debilitating mental disorder such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, causing them to take their life when the pain got the better of them. This hapless individual surely deserves eternal damnation: their symbolic sense was simply not developed enough; logic be damned, it's just atheist talk.

/lit/, I don't normally make threads asking for recommendations but I don't know what to do. I cannot get into almost ANYTHING I read lately: got 50 pages from the end in Child of God and stopped caring. Got 80ish pages into Neuromancer and didn't care about the plot. Started reading American Pastoral and in about 50 pages decided I should probably be 50 years old to appreciate it.

The last thing I finished was Point Omega by Don Delillo and it was just alright.

I've read big-ass books before (BK, GR, IJ, etc.) so I know I can concentrate but lately I can't for some reason. I did recently switch to working graveyard shift so maybe that's fucking with my head.

I honestly don't even know what to ask for since I don't even know what I want right now.

The last books I've read over a few months that I actually enjoyed were The Cyberiad, Augustus, Stoner, The Forever War, Oedipis Rex, Mockingbird, and The Stars My Destination. Nothing over 400 pages would be ideal since I can't focus anymore ;_;

I'm feeling down. Any books about characters fighting through depressing situations?

My favorite examples would be Mockingbird and Stoner.

It's shit. I couldn't bring myself to read beyond a couple of paragraphs. The introduction is neither interesting or witty, and the writing itself is obfuscating and contrived. Is this the sort of shit I need to be writing if I want to be successful? If so I might as well just kill myself now.

>Is there a greater opening piece to a book in the history of literature?

Getting real tired of all these summer kids quipping about "the history of literature" after only reading a handful of books.
