Have you considered that it's actually a tale of shifting illusions? Imagery of light and darkness are a huge key for understanding this (imho more interesting) reading of Araby.

Every edition is different or has problems, but the Gabler edition is what most scholars use.
There was a thread about this article just a few weeks ago about John Kidd who claimed that the Gabler text was full of issues if you're interested.
