The first Poppy War book involves a character learning magic from a school but the country breaks down and it becomes about war.

So, I'm halfway through pic related. Does it get any better? I just got to the chapter where the MC sees real combat for the first time and so far every single character in this book (MC included) is shallow as fuck.
MC in particular sounds like a fucking shonen anime character that has only 2 modes: retarded determination and retarded rage.
Are the other books in the series any better? Should I keep going or just stop?

for those of you who have read The Poppy War, would you consider Rin a likeable female protagonist? please no spoilers
