Why is Marx considered a 'onions' philosopher?

Look, I get that he goes beyond the utopian socialists in postulating historical materialism. I get that he performs a critique of political economy in order to expose the contradictions of capitalism. I get that he applies Hegelian metaphysics to the economic realm.
But the simple fact of the matter is that he didn't take into account human nature. People are selfish and lazy and need incentives to work and competition to innovate.
