>Honesly who is the Goethe of the post-revolution France?

Zola probably.

French literature dominated the 19th century as well, there'd have been no Wilde or symbolism without the frogs (Gide in particular).

The French have more Nobel prizes for literature than any other country, fwiw.

Existentialism and Nouvelle Roman were incredibly influential in the 50s/60s.

A large number of anglophone writers (especially in the USA) have basically been influenced by/copied and stolen from French writers because they know they'll get away with it because nobody reads french.

French literature is incredibly important in the evolution of European (and by extension American) literature.

Proust wrote a very long book.

So, basically, "everyone acts purely in their own interests because I say so, and if they don't its because they're delusional"?

There are tons of productive citizens who wore fedoras, and most likely a few presidents
Are you saying that all those people are edgy manchildren? Even if they wore fedoras long before they were associated with teenage pseudo-intellectuals?

Alright /lit/, I just finished reading Slaughter House five and I'd like to discuss it. For those of you who haven't read it, I will throw in the spoiler alert right meow.

So what is the point exactly of the book? I read it and I felt it was an almost pointless book that I couldn't figure out the meaning to. Is it just about what happened in Dresden? What do the Tralfamadores signify? The thing that I got out of this book was the pointless existence Billy. He went along withe everything and never actually questioned his existence until his accident and his encounter with the aliens. I don't understand, am I supposed to have some sort of hate towards him? Because if that was the point, Vonnegut accomplished it nicely. I feel the book sorta lacked. I enjoy his sense of humor but I just can't figure out the main point exactly. Just that Dresden got bombed and thousands of people died? I don't know, I feel I'm missing something. Please help me figure it out.

Why do you have to be like that? I made my point clear for why I enjoyed it -- the main characters' lives seem somewhat similar mine. And I enjoy his own critique against the 68's and whatnot

>>3443109
I'd say the reasons above are why most enjoy his works. Or what do you think?
