I should clear out some misconceptions here. The image in >>20769509 has, in fact, two excerpts. While they are from the same chapter, they are not from same scene and such it might be misleading to read first page and then the second right after. I did not want to include whole chapter as it would have been a big picture, rather I wanted to show the the way Cnaiur talks without revealing any major plot points.

When any piece of text is posted in /sffg/, without exception, they have always been ridiculed based on subjective opinions. And as mere opinions any statements can be disregarded, unless you are looking for anonymous opinions. But we are not looking for mere opinions and statements, we are looking to have more comprehensible understanding of a writer's prose (and style). Instead on focusing here on someone's opinion as a final assessment based on observations, I will rather concentrate on these base observations.

>>20770708
No base observation, mere opinion, and likely from someone who disliked Bakker before the image was posted.

>>20770726
I think it weird to judge a book based on a novel's character's opinions. It might be different than you in this but I can read books where characters have differing opinions were they "stupid" in my opinion or not. I'll let the pseud thing slide as it doesn't mean anything and is also just an opinion.

>>20770733
Its funny you should say that because it literally is a madman raving to these Inrithi lords, who are themselves very much tied into a politico-religious holy war. Again, it is not a valid argument in my opinion to say something about someone's writings because you don't agree with the characters. Why shouldn't books have raving madmen or zealots? I'm sorry if it was incomprehensible for you. May I suggest Mistborn for you?

>>20770769
When people talk to each other, the way they talk is very much stream of consciousness. You'd know this if you ever did any writing. Also it is baseless to say the whole book or Bakker himself is something because Cnaiur is like himself.

>>20770773
I think this is a subjective opinion. See other responds above. The Scylvendi have one religion, and its war. And Cnaiur merely states his beliefs. I'm sorry a fantasy character doesn't agree with you.

>>20770783
See first paragraph of this post.

All hyper-masculine socities are nazis then?

>>20770824
How deep you'd think a barbarian expresses his philosophy in a heated argument?

To sum it up: No one here has been able to provide any objective statements about his prose. All is just ramblings of Bakker-haters.

Don't really know what floats your boat but I'll tell you about my experience reading the book and what happened after.
I was quite new to fantasy couple of years ago, not really reading much of anything until some kind of reading bug hit me and I've been reading a lot since. I started with stuff like LotR, Witcher, Mistborn and so on until one day I saw some reviews of Bakker's books and /sffg/ was teeming with memes about the series, so I decided why no try, what harm could it do?
I got my hands on the ebook, and ordered a copy from the library. So far so good so I started reading and as I did I noticed it was pretty good. Prose was something I had not seen before, quite ornate but still dense and full of meaning. The characters were interesting and the world was fleshed out thoroughly. And not much time went by as I ordered in fact, all the rest of the books from the library so I could read them and ordered the actual books from Amazon and whatnot so I could have copies of my own one day. To make a long story short, I was hooked and I did read all the seven books of the Second Apocalypse series in couple months and ever since no fantasy has ever felt quite the same as the series left a big hole in my heart when it ended. Since then, I've listened to the audiobooks twice, enjoying each time a little more.
Might be, that you will like the books, who knows? Start with The Darkness That Comes Before.

Bakker if you want a book that sucks you in, makes you exult in the victories of the holy war, weep in joy and terror with his amazing prose in the heat of battle.

I'm on my third reread of Prince of Nothing. There is so much depth in the books, things I've still managed to not notice. And God, does chapter 6 of the Warrior-Prophet bring tears into my eyes. I can just feel the exultation of the Holy War as the Galeoth and Thunyeri are fighting the Fanim.

It is a wonderful and dark story of a holy war where the intentions of different players clash in a way no one expects, as a lone wanderer from the north gains providence among the armies. Ancient prophecies are recalled and old enemies confronted. There is philosophy, mystique, and intrigue. There are grand moments, human moments, and moments of clarity.

And after all, you might even learn real life lessons about the darkness, that comes before YOU.

I took the chances and applauded Spain. Well, good job Spain for supplying Mexico its language. Very weird indeed. Mexico is then closer to grasping the Absolute.

There is probably 3 persons in this thread that have read the Second Apocalypse series and they are all defending Bakker.

Not only is the worldbuilding good, so is the prose and so is the underlying premise and theme of the books. That series has left a lasting impression on me.

It seems to make sense for everyone given what we know so far, unless you are a Uber chad magic autist who can maybe join in on the spidering in the Outside or you snort a king and grasp the Absolute (Hegel btfo).
As the tekne and logos both just seem to be logic applied in the extreme it follows that the Consult are on the right track.
