It's been a bit since I read it but there is one chapter where he is walking through a city and notes all the immigrants like asians, muslims, even a black guy who looks like a pimp. I believe he also focuses on the shabby buildings. One of the muslims bumps into him while leaving a mosque, I think. So was he shitting on the immigrants and how much Europe has changed or am I just brainwashed by this website? There is another part of the book where he admires paintings of old Europe. It all seemed rather melancholic, but then again, the whole book was kind of melancholic. It just seemed odd to me because I've heard that Sebald was kind of a goody-two-shoes when it came to social issues so I wasn't expecting this seemingly negative portrayal of the diversity in the European city.

The Rings of Saturn by W.G. Sebald. I almost dropped this one but it has really grown on me recently, so I'm glad I stuck with it.

The Rings of Saturn by Sebald

A man gets grim about the mouth and decides to go walking across Suffolk in England. Along the way he reminisces on England as it was earlier in his own lifetime, and in the lifetimes of many literary figures of the past. His thoughts meander from place to person to work of literature, pulling ideas and images that form a tapestry of mankind on a never ending cycle of destruction and renewal. Will man ever achieve the metamorphosis of a moth or forever be the silkworm engulfed in the flames of progress.

Even more so knowing that Sebald is dead. It’s like the musings of your grandfather, and you know he’s soon going to join all those moments lost to history
