I have to write an essay on this TODAY for my post colonial texts class, and compare with any number of essays relating to post colonialism (Hegel's Master/Slave Dialect, Fanon's Black Skin/White Mask, Said, Orientalsim, Manichean Allegory, Poco - Chronology, etc.)

Problem is, I only barely understand what the book is about, and have even less of an understanding of most of those theories.

Anyone care to help me, and save me the shame, money and embarrassment of having to repeat my goddamn exams.

What are some great novels about epic journeys that examine the darkness with mankind?

Hey /lit/ I'm going to be climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro in May and was wondering what books would you take along to read?
So far I'm taking pic related, but can't figure out much else.

Love the book, but Apocalypse Now is a fucking masterpiece.

Post choice quotes from novels that you like, like so:

"Anything approaching the change that came over his features I have never seen before, and hope never to see again. Oh, I wasn't touched. I was fascinated. It was as though a veil had been rent. I saw on that ivory face the expression of sombre pride, of ruthless power, of craven terror - of an intense and hopeless despair. Did he live his life again in every detail of desire, temptation, and surrender during that supreme moment of complete knowledge? He cried in a whisper at some image, at some vision - he cried out twice, a cry that was no more than a breath -

'The horror! The horror!'"

We rewrite great books in 2 sentences. I'll start:

"Boy, it sure is boring on this boat, anybody know a good story?"
"Wow, that was quite a story."

What was the most difficult book you've read so far /lit/?

I read this after watching Apocalypse Now, and I found the structure of the narration and the main character narrating at the same time to be really confusing. Still a good book though.

Just read this, what does /lit/ think of Heart of Darkness? Also, can you friends recommend some other good works about imperialism/civilized man interacting with uncivilized territory?

>Heart of Darkness
Just got this book as a summer reading for AP English Literature. Also have to read Catch-22, but I already read that prior.

I don't know much about it. I hear Heart of Darkness is unbearably boring, similar to The Scarlet Letter...but its a book you just kind of have to read.

What does /lit/ say about Heart of Darkness? Will I find it to be good?

Hey, /lit/,

I was just wondering if any of you can see a parallel between Jung's theory of the unconscious and Conrad's Heart of Darkness.

Is it just me or is this a little hard to read? The 3 page long paragraphs seem to ramble. At times the prose is nice though. Am I retarded?

I'm reading HoD now and I can't stand it. Why is the narrative all in dialogue?

This is not how people talk and it just comes off as fucking stupid.
