Me doing this is a stupid waste of time, and if there was a timer to show me how much of a waste it is, it would shock me into evaluating why I did so in the first place.
The entire argument is not merely the initial emotional response, that is just the initial step to making you evaluate it. It's a catalyst to slap you with the reality of the situation, so that you can't defend it as an abstraction.
