das where the homeless dude normally chills and spazes out.
greatly prefer the homeless dude outside harvard book store who is perpetually practicing rifts on his guitar. once saw him lay some mad game on a harvard undergrad in JP licks while waiting in line. first time i've ever seen a homeless bro get a chicks number. the staple personalities in harvard square are really distinct and actually kinda interesting people.

i'm there pretty much every morning, every afternoon, and every evening, at some point or another. nice way to break up the day and i go through roughly ~20-25 espresso shots in a day to counteract chemo.

yeah i dunno. espresso express in newton is currently repairing my machine so i'm stuck with them.
1369 is open again but it's sorta like...whatever. waiting for bloc in union square to reopen. loyal nine also makes mad good maple lattes but they are a much longer walk.
black sheep is good bagels but never liked their coffee. fromaggio on huron ave seems to have the best selection of espresso beans in the area for when you make your own. george howell--but far away in boston.

where do you all pick up from? always looking to expand.

good call on russia. the argument against using america as the context is exactly that: it is far less aparent how the aesthetic state manifested there. certainly not on the level of any theory a la german context. for founding america the argument revolves around the use/abuse/acceptance/rejection of rhetoric--the tension between image-politics and word-politics that for someone like martin jay or jacques ellul is part of a greater historical movement from the icon to hermeneutics/the word. rhetoric would have been more in the primary sources had america been pursued--connolly's "the state of speech" taking on a large role and bringing in the ancients as well--this would have led to discussions surrounding the founders relations to the ancients, etc., but we ultimately thought the german route was far more cohesive, coherent, and lends itself to more "direct" scholarship. you can see that the american route would have required a lot more manipulation/ground work/bridging larger time frames.

do you have interest in the subject? you seem knowledgable.

and up from the ashes--a new, real, true enemy! oh how you excite me, anon, how happy you make me feel. you press your hand against the wall--mine mirrors it on the other side. you seem interesting and ambitious. how old are you? what do you do?
tell me more about your story, please.
your inklings are provocative. do you see yourself taking a part? ideally, what would that part look like--what is it you would "found"?
you are near boston?

yes, i'm american, born in DC and live now in cambridge, MA.
i've been running a private seminar/reading group in cambridge now for a couple of years. it's a good system: colleagues from previous institutions ive learned/taught at send me their "best and brightest" who i then introduce to one another and hook up with further career prospects, depending on their interests. its very directly and openly a kinda bourdieu/pinsky-like "state nobility/cultural capital" system that i justify based on strict meritocratic guidelines. i've taken very wealthy and very poor students; students from all backgrounds and ranges; nationals and internationals; they are all defined by simply being a cut above.
at this point i pretty much exclusively work with friends/colleagues from harvard/MIT. it's worked out pretty well so far, you get your occasional disappointment, but it has for the most part become exactly what i want it to be.
if you are near the boston area and are qualified/interested, let me know. in principle i don't mind expanding the program and opening up not only the reading lists and archived scans, etc., but a greater community that takes seriously aspects of the project i've outlined above. or just very brilliant aesthetes and thinkers.

>After the death of Duke Xiaogong, Shang Yang was unjustly accused by senior members of the aristocracy of plotting against the new ruler. He had to flee for his life.
On his escape route he was unable to find a place to spend the night because no innkeeper would dare to break the law and accommodate a traveler without an internal passport.
>Ironically, this provision was one of the “reforms” established by Shang Yang.
>He was arrested and then executed by being torn to pieces by chariot-pulling
>a form of penal punishment he helped to institute.
