Already you rattle my limbs
like tameless, sweet-
bitter wind sweeps through the mountain oaks,
bringing in the autumn and
its dizziness of ardors. Leaves fall
as they do, and balletic,
you thrill the skin.

Now it is November,
and lips against mine,
you swallow these fresh whorls of vertigo,
which we shall call rhapsody,
that pour from my tongue, from my veins.
I mean only to fill your lungs
as you have saturated mine.

I mean only to keep you warm.
Soon the snow will come,
blanching these hills, blotting the fields
with winter, little white fugue
of heather and violets. How frigid
the earth hums
in anticipation;

how it threatens to disrupt,
to uncouple
and hush
in the weeks still to come
this our choir of mutual breath,
that kindles the greenest of leaves,
that silences even the birds.
