No problem. I've no doubt that some people do go into debt for legitimate reasons but my (limited) experience has been people using the money for things like travelling across the whole of Ireland twice a week in their car to see their boyfriend, or paying for vacations to Magaluf when they're on the income of a waitress.

Honestly, I have no idea. I think that the people dumb enough to not fall into these traps won't listen to anyone if they did try to help them anyway.

The idealist in me would like to introduce ethics/philosophy in school to try and make people understand their place in the world, their moral responsibilities to themselves and their fellow man in the context of society, and to hopefully instil them with the tools to lead an honest life. The realist in me assumes they'd go "lol, gay" and ignore it.

For another anecdote, I used to live with a girl who'd finished some shit degree in sociology or something. She kept talking about wanting to do a Masters in computer science. Such a degree would secure a good future for her. I, someone who'd finished a masters in electrical engineering, offered to help teach her the basics of programming to help with her application on four different occasions. She never took me up on them and in the end never bothered with the degree. I've since moved out but last I saw she was still drifting in life, doing menial work. What are you supposed to do when people know what they can do, they have the resources available and then just don't do it?

Yes, to some extent. I'd like to think that explaining in selfish terms how debt traps can fuck them for life would change their minds. That said, people still smoke and have a "life for today" attitude so I don't know how much good it would do. It's probably better than doing nothing though.
