You mixed your thinking you're clever with being stupid. To imagine, to fathom for a single instant, that such a grammatical scrounger walks this earth. To think that someone lacking in any ability themselves except for the prudish schoolmistress's eye for correct spelling, can pass so confident and final judgement, really makes you want to take a swill of the ole scotch and question just what sort of species you were born into. All of this happening under indifferent, blinking stars. Makes you wonder what sort of God put on this macabre circus. None that I'd care pray to.

Maybe you need to explain what's wrong with writing scenes and stories in your head.
I write however it comes to me; I don't impose rules on my muse.

Glad I could help. Now go write something!

Again, length limitations...it was the nature of the snippet, not the whole novel.

At the core of any character are a set of values.
Those values lead to one or more priorities.
Differing priorities between people lead to conflict and drama.
A character arc is when one of someone's values changes over time.
These simple rules can of course be expanded and colored in, but they are the basics.

Finished my detective story. 19 551 words of GARBAGE. I bookend it so it ends and begins with the same exact paragraph, which ties into the protagonist being mired in the bog of his past and being stuck doing the same shit for over ten years.
Time to write something new. You guys know this feeling, right? When you finish something and feel free to chase anything you want.

Just a splash and she was gone. The dark river kept its secrets well; you couldn't see an inch below the surface. Not even the brightness of her dress could shine from below that dirty brown.
Running steps made the boards on the pier creak, as lanterns were rushed to the scene. Spotlights were lit, boats lowered into the water with men holding nets and hooks and from many mouths escaped the cry of her name, Dorothea, Dorothea!
A mist rose from the bogs, bringing with it the stench of their rot and decay, as if to mock our hopes of finding her alive. Yes, the river would keep its secrets, that fog seemed to say. It was the curtain that fell over our play with a sense of finality in its swirls, covering the tragicomic rescuers beneath it, covering up their lights and leaving them but pale spots, and soon all that remained was the fog and the still echoing cry of Dorothea, Dorothea!

Honest-Tilki's carpet cleaning was in the lower city. You never go down into the lower city alone, not at night. I had to go back to the office to pick up a couple friends, ones who were always waiting for me.
My office was on the second floor, right above a fortune teller's place. The Madame was out of town seeing family and had given me a spare key to go water her plants. Can't recall if I ever did it. My office had no plants.
I had a little trouble with the lock again. Landlord refused to fix the damn door. I stepped inside and tried to turn on the lights. Nothing. My foot rustles over something on the ground. I picked it up, an envelope. Had to go to the window to read it. A letter from the electric company, they were turning off the juice due to unpaid bills.
I crumpled the letter and dropped it into the garbage can, where it met an impassable hill of previous bills and other waste, which forced it out and on to the floor. I really needed to empty that out some time. A secretary's job, only I couldn't pay for one.
My misfortunes continued as I put my coat over the back of the chair and it fell off. Couldn't be bothered to pick it up. I sat in the chair, which groaned under my bulk. It always did, more and more as that bulk grew. Glue and belts held it together well enough.
I opened a desk drawer to find my friends. Both were metal on the outside but one contained things to put in other people, the other stuff to put in me.

Gutenberg invented the printing press in 1440 A.D., and things have gone mostly downhill since then. With every new innovation of mechanical reproduction, quality is necessarily abandoned in favor of efficiency. Quantity reigns supreme, and the democratization of books has brought with it the abandonment of form and technique. The elaborate woodblock prints and hand-copied scrolls of Edo period Japan, which produced some of the most elaborate and beautiful books known to man, gave way to the movable type printing of the Meji period and hundreds of years of tradition was lost. In Europe, the Gutenberg printing press not only sparked the beginning of the Enlightenment and Protestant Revolutions, but also brought about an end to the elaborate calligraphic styles that had been painstakingly developed by monasteries across the West. Digitalization has created an era of excessive information, where texts in the form of electronic data can be replicated an infinite amount of times and shared throughout the world with the click of a button. While this represents a remarkable achievement of human ingenuity, it does not come without its cost. Homogenization of ideas, tendency towards cheap and low effort content, and a sudden death of the publishing industry are all necessary results of digitalization.
