Anything beyond three to five books and quality tends to drop off, especially if it is the same handful of characters. There comes a point when there is no excitement in discovering what will happen. This can be offset by focusing on new plots with largely unrelated characters but ive rarely seen it successful.

No. They are sub-par. For a better experience in fiction read Malazan, book of the fallen. Is there a chart for grand narrative fantasy fiction? Wheel of Time, Malazan, Asoiaf.
