Of course you can. You can extend your sympathy to anything and everything that exists.

Sympathy does not equate to acceptance. You can sympathize with a Muslim terrorist as a fellow human, understand his views and motivations, wish him all the best and also shoot him in the head to stop him from committing violence on you and your kin.
Just because you sympathize with someone does not mean you are entirely controlled by that sympathy. You do not need to dehumanize everyone you deem to be an opponent.
