The only good slam poet I've ever seen was gay black guy from Oakland, CA talking about how his first real sexual experience was with a middle class white guy with a wife, and how it was his most cherished moment (a play on getting fucked by the patriarchy was how I read it). He was a fan of heroic couplets, but didn't restrict himself to them, switching to common metre, blank verse and even free when the situation called for it. This man was eloquent. His diction was fantastic, body movements were subtle so as not to take away from the language, vocabulary varied, and he spoke soft enough that everyone had to be completely quiet--no clapping, no cheering, no shouting "YEAH, FUCK WHITEY ETC," which pretty much every other poet welcomes. All in all, he was one of the best contemporary poets I've ever seen, putting him far and away above anything Slam has normally ever achieved.

He lost to a white girl with dreads talking about how hard she had it now that her black boyfriend left her with their baby and how welfare barely cut it in "tha street." I'm not even joking.

just a reminder that people aren't equal and never will be
