Don't bother. It's over-rated toss. It's a joke that he and Samuel Beckett came up with when they were pissed up one night, but Joyce took the joke too far, and that's why they fell out.

I'm not OP, but Ulysses is a parochial period piece that seems to me to have absolutely no relevance to 21st century experience, and I think that an increasing number of academicians are becoming exasperated with the presence of this ugly, tiresome book in the middle of any discussion of modern English writing. There is, however, a massive industry based around Joyce and his witterings, and no-one can ever get close to an actual appraisal of his works without bringing down the Bloomsday committee and the Dublin Tourist Board down on your head like a bunch of angry Provos.

It's full of stylisic tricks, and erudite allusions, all of which serve to aggrandise the author, while at bottom the book is a soul-less and tiresome exercise in minutiae.

It's a decent guide book to early 20th century Dublin, I suppose, but who needs one of those?
