I don’t think Spengler himself would agree with me, but Spengler’s philosophy is in reality ambivalent but can be seen as optimistic or pessimistic depending on the context and the length of time you look at him at.

In the current context either at the late fall or early winter of western civilization it’s easy to see this as pessimistic, but when I culture becomes truly so corrupt and decadent that the lives of those inside it are hurt isn’t it a good thing for it to fall apart? I guess you might still be pessimistic seeing as how the betting man would gamble the full collapse won’t occur within our lifetime, but it might for our children or children’s children. As well new civilizations will rise in its place. Spengler already took the care to provide us with a hope in the distant future. Russia. Of course this will eventually decline possibly a thousand years from now, but again something else will take its place.

It's fall. We have yet to achieve Western Caesarism/Civilization, Spengler predicted it would arrive between 2100 and 2200. Things are only going to get worse.

Agreed, that's a remarkably stupid response from Chesterton. You'd think he'd have noticed given how arbitrarily Spengler labeled things (e.g. naming the Faustian Soul after his favorite Goethe book.)

What's wrong with the existing unabridged set from Forgotten Books?

Spengler is to Western thinking as Aurelius was to Classical thinking. Faustian thought, like Stoic thought, allows for no victory or joy, merely a resistance to the failure and decline they consider inevitable.
