>talking to girlfriend over coffee about an acquaintance of hers
>she's bitching about how selfish this female is and how yet people still put up with it
>"Don't you just hate her anon?"
>ask how I could hate someone I've never met and then mention offhandedly how coincidentally her attitude reminds me of a philosopher I was just reading up on the night before
>she accuses me of defending her
>reply that lack of a criticism is not a defense
>tell her that the philosophy is actually quite interesting when you get past the amoral aspects of it and it's fascinating that her acquaintance has achieved such success with it
>she breaks up with me

True fucking story.

How do you deal with the fact you're maturing into a cynical center-left intellectual in a world increasingly vocational, pragmatist and neoliberal

you're a dying class and this isn't the 60s so you're not even cool anymore

>people actually think that you're supposed to agree with, support, and generally like the protagonist of a book in order to like the book itself

Book changed my life for the better in college through negative reinforcement. Made me realize that I was being a neckbeard and got me to want to stop all that.

I disagree with >>4547203's statement on why people don't like The Big Bang Theory, but he's pretty much spot on as to why people hate A Confederacy Of Dunces.

"Lost" about 5 books this way. I lost contact with those people.

I always return borrowed books so fast...

I come from the premise that if there was a way to make me immortal, there is a way to make me mortal again.

Read The Immortal by Borges.

But the short answer is NO.

Immortality doesn't give you time, it doesn't expand who you are as much as it dillutes you, it spreads you.

Imagine an infinite slice of bread and all you'll ever have is a 100 grams of butter. It's just so frutratring.

My face when immortality.

>last
Oscar Wilde's "Salome"

>currently
The Catcher in the Rye
(I'm European, and we never read Salinger in school, so I decided to have a go at it. Holden's one edgy fucker.)

>next
James Joyce's "A Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man"

These are for my own pleasure, trough. I will probably have to read some other play from my country first.

>Read a page in a book without actually taking in anything it says
>Zone out for paragraphs at a time
>Misread a sentence
>Happens over and over

That frustration.
