What should I read to make good tabletop sessions? What should I read to be a good DM?

So, I know most people on /lit/ dislike fantasy. Probably because most of it is godawful. But let's channel that hatred into something constructive. I'm very curious what a fantasy novel would look like without any of the major cliches.

First off, let's eliminate the Hero's Journey. No young boy dreaming of adventure finds a mentor mentor dies boy fights evil guy. Let's also say that our protagonist is not a terribly bloated Mary Sue self insert.

What are some other things we could eliminate/add to make an original fantasy novel? Whether it's whole concepts or little details that seem to pop up in every self published piece of shit. I'm by no means an expert on the genre but I know most of you hate it so go ahead and take this as a chance to say what it is you specifically hate about fantasy as a genre.
