Yes, the contemporary literature awards and "media" surrounding it are very affirmative action.

The Iliad was in between literature and history. It is far far more important as a poem and as something that showed us what the Greeks thought and how they lived, not as a damn story.

There's the infamous lists which epics are known for (most notably, the ships, but then there's also the YALIBABAR, WHO LIVED BETWEEN THE HUIGFSD AND UFIH RIVER, SON OF HERYIKAJ WHO WAS SON OF...), there's all the geography, there's all the Greek customs (the games and how they bury people and how they worship...), and in the original Greek, it's supposed to be some of the greatest poetry ever written, but I can't vouch for that.

The story? The story is digressive, one-dimensionally mythological, and underwhelming. Far more of the Iliad is this hero fighting that hero and this side getting slightly more advantaged than this side and this petty quarrel between this god and that one than any explicit attempt to move forward the plot of Achilles.

Living of literature isn't the same as being a writer. There's all kinds of parasites.

I'm kidding, but yeah as you said still doable. If you have an average job (not hard physical labor or anything like that) you should be able to read as much as you want; we do get a lot of free time in this day and age.

As if that will have any relevancy in 50 years.

The idea occurred to me in another thread but I'll post it here too.

Should I (we) make a /lit/ patriciancore chart?

/mu/ has one (by the infamous CLT) and I think we should as well.

Obviously /mu/ sucks but it'd be fun and helpful to collect the highest works of literature.

We have Exit-level but that only deals mainly with esoteric depression.

What is the point of criticism? What value does it get the elite reader, the average reader, the non-reader?

From where I stand, criticism seems like arbitrary discrimination, a way for academics and aesthetes (that is, non-creatives) to posture, blowing smoke and the less literate in order to elevate themselves. Doesn't this kind of partisanship only work to stifle literary and creative innovation?

title unrelated but cute
