Lately I've been thinking of Ivan Karamazov's prose poem, the Grand Inquisitor, where the inquisitor challenges Jesus Christ who returned on Earth in medieval Spain. While Dostoevsky has obviously tried to frame it that the inquisitor was wrong in his assertions, he doesn't have Jesus propose any counter arguments (only a gross kiss on the lips).

I side with the inquisitor because the vast majority of humans cannot tolerate their free will. In the christian framework this only excludes most humans from the possibility of redemption, since Christianity demands its believers to choose starvation in faith over bread. Asked to choose between some vague and abstract idea like freedom or faith and a loaf of bread, most people will take the bread and therefore (supposed) eternal damnation.
