This book encompasses the popular zizek quote "a man is a woman who believes she exists".

Ryuji gave up torturing himself with these meaningless Nietchzean ideals and realized he's no different than the simple women and whores he's been with. According to noboru's companions, this idealism is the only thing that separates man and woman. Ryuji giving up these ideals to become a father makes them uncomfortable with thier ideology.

The quote by Zizek "A man is a woman who believes she is a exists" sums up most of this book.
A woman does not serve as complementary to man, rather something that castrates him. I'd go futher to say that a man never had a symbolic "penis" itself, he invents it by pretending he is not like a woman. Ultimately after his naive boyish idealism wades out, he has to succumb to roles that are similar to what a woman can do, caring for a child, being financially independent, and doing work that does not require the mythical heroism of the ubermensch. The woman castrates Ryuji once he falls in love and decides to fulfill his role as the caretaker of Noboru. Noboru dispised his mother, but she is everywhere in order to display the sharp contrast between her mediocrity and the Sailor. The boy reacts violently when he realized that Ryuiji has left his hopes to work together with Fukaso. Perhaps he's even going to become like her.

One or the best books I've ever read. Perfect for delusional, idealistic young men.

What did you guys think about The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea? Maybe it was just the translation I read (John Nathan) but I think the prose was kinda amateurish at time. It seems like the underdeveloped prose style of a potentially great writer. Some passages were legitimately beautiful but others seemed purple.

How can anyobdy walk away from this book thinking Mishima actually supports the Ideology of Noboru and his gang.
Everytime you are shown his inner thoughts and principles it's made abundantly clear how abhorrent and inhumane their way of thinking is. I realize that Mishima was very traditional and opposed to westernization, but the actions of Noboru just insult every sense of decency and understanding inherent to every civilized person.
The cat disscetion part actually made me nauseous. How can people read that and think the author was trying to showcase a legitimate world view?

What the fuck did I just read? His writing style is nice and all but nothing makes sense in this book. Is noboru just a self insert for his ideas? The way all the kids think and act is completely stupid and unrealistic.
