I just got finished working through picrel and it's made me interested in understanding Britain proper in greater scope and detail. So far this is the list I've compiled. Each of them are meant to be very comprehensive on their own:

An Imperial Possession David Mattingly (Roman rule)

Anglo-Norman Warfare Matthew Strickland (Saxon/Norman warfare)

The Struggle For Mastery David Carpenter (Norman rule)

English Reformations Christopher Haigh (Reformation era)

Replenishing the Earth James Belich (19th-20th century)

Feedback is appreciated. I intend to use this list as a foundation for investigating more classical sources, of course.

Graeber is ideologically biased, but I've read and found insight from him.

Albion's Seed by David Hackett Fischer

It's not a light read by any means but it's vital to understanding the USA and forming a anthropological worldview that can be applied to a variety of other societies. The usefulness of Fischer's folkway model can't be understated. The book is exhaustively researched and analyzed. I'd recommend his other work as well, but this in particular is a great read.

A lot of critiques of the book are critiquing examining American history through a strictly materialist lens. Zinn's specific historical materialism is especially fundamentalist to the extent that he heavily downplays the role of religion and culture even while talking about the history of religions and cultures themselves. Zinn also frequently says figures were acting greedily/deceitfully without evidence. On top of all this a lot of the evidence he does present is anecdotal, and cherry-picked to support his thesis and overall views. Citations are sparse at best, but usually absent and muddled....

I could go on and on. There are much more rigorous and helpful books on American history, albeit People's History is worth reading since it has become so influential and a lot of laypeople treat it as authoritative.
