I just read Ficciones and wow, it is realy good. There are so many things; math, religion, policy, metaphors and more. In the weekend I will surely read El Aleph.
So, did you read Ficiones or something other from Jorge Borges?

Hey /lit/, I like Borges' Parable of the Palace, but I'm not sure I completely understand it. What is the allegory?

Alright /lit/.

I'd like to read some Borges (specifically Ficciones) since everyone recommends him highly, but as an already bilingual reader I'd hate to read him in anything other than the original Spanish. However, I have only studied Spanish for five years at school, and doubt my level is good enough.

For those of you who have read Ficciones, would anything of value be lost if I were to read a translation? I don't think I'd enjoy authors such as Salinger or Wodehouse half as much translated.

Do you think the original text is too difficult for a non-Hispanosphone to read?

I have the same issue with Eduardo Galeano and haven't read anything by him yet for the very same reason.

Thankyou.

Dear e/lit/ists,
seeing that many of you like Borges a great deal, I was wondering if you'd be interested in reading some of his interviews.

I'm talking about 2 interviews for "A fondo" (some TV show from Spain). Both last over 1 hour and a half, they can be found online (with no subs) and in them, JLB speaks at great length about a whole lot of things, his life, his career, what he thinks about his colleagues, etc.

I'd be doing the translation and may recruit another fellow i/lit/erate for proofing, as my English is pretty poor.
I thought of subbing the interviews but it will probably take me over 50 hours each and I don't have so much free time.

So, anyway, would you be interested?

Jorge Luis Borges. I've heard 'The Circular Ruins' is decent, and I plan on reading it. Your opinions on this work, and the author in general? I have never read any of his works before.

Borges really liked Schopenhauer.

>In Geneva he acquired his enduring love of Schopenhauer, his favorite of all the philosophers

Jorge Luis Borges, your thought on him? Personally, I found his entire Collected Fictions from the library and read through it. I really loved the recurring themes of infinity, labyrinths, dreams, mirrors, destiny, knife-fights, duels, fate. At first his style of writing was a little difficult to adjust to, but i found that i got used to it after the second story or so. As well i find his whole "introduce a fictional book/author/contemporaries and offer insights/reviews/critiques on them" approach to telling stories intriguing. My favourite stories were probably The Three Versions of Judas, The House of Asterion, The Zahir, The Library of Babel, and The Parable of the Palace
