Having read entire Dune series and Books of New and Long Sun, I can only say I greatly prefer Wolfe's writing style. His greatest advantage over Herbert is that he wrote his series in a bulk. There are many years between first four Dune books, so Herbert's style is all over the place. Sadly, only the last two novels actually feel like they go hand in hand. On the other hand, Herbert makes all of his characters' intentions clear. Wolfe's narration is focused only on his protagonists' point of view, so his readers have to come to many conclusions by themselves.
My favorite Dune books were Messiah and God Emperor not because they were so good, but because they left me wanting for more. Wolfe's Book of the New Sun delivered everything I wanted from Dune and much more.
