I don't get it. Why is this so highly praised, why did Fitzgerald consider it his best?

It reads like a parody of the "rich people faffing about"-novel, except it's actually earnest.

Stylistically it's nothing special and reads like it came from a sort of proto-modernist environment, maybe the 1880s. For 1934 it's a fucking joke.

Psychologically it is naive, and again feels way older than it actually is.

Thought Fitzgerald was mediocre and not worth the time after reading Gatsby. Read Tender is the Night and had my balls blown off. I try to give canon authors two shots. Not every book is fabulous, and skill can vary drastically over a lifespan.

Just finished pic related and have no idea what to read next.

Currently reading Tender is the Night (1951 revised version)-- I personally think it is better than Great Gatsby. Why do people not like the book as much?
