I'm cringing a little bit at some of my phrasing and my namedropping postmodernism when I didn't really know what it meant but I still stand by this as a piece of advice.

Some great artists were terrible narcissists, but they made their names in spite of this, not as a result of this. It is more important than ever that the natural narcissism of the artistic temperament should be overcome, and a mentoring relationship with past greats be fostered.

Artists are the only beings for whom gods still exist, and we oughtn't take that for granted by abusing or profaning their works.

What a miserable and pointless year that was. I had to read Cat's Eye by Margaret Atwood, some compilation of the writings of Michael Leunig and we watched All About Eve. I suspect that the majority of the students who perform well in VCE English are the ones who can force themselves to regurgitate shit they don't care about better than everyone else. I like it when I read about it in books but then whenever I meet the real thing I feel uncomfortable and slightly disgusted and just want to go back to my books. I like Christian writers but IRL everyday Christians just aren't my kind of people. But then I don't like people in general. They're not like the ones in my books.
