I think it would be fun to make a chart which notes the sources of some of our idioms and sayings, or those which are most often referenced in media and everyday conversations. Obviously this chart is for Anglo countries. I think it'll end up mostly: Greeks, Bible+Christian works, and Shakespeare along with a few poets. So, what texts/stories do you find are often referenced or were the source of some saying/idiom.
