What is perceived as holy in buddhism? Any literature about it?

I've been trying to do some research on the subject as buddhism differs a lot from other religions, yet haven't found anyhting yet.

Some sources say everything's sacred for buddhist as life itself is a gift, whereas other sources cite Nirvana as what buddhist perceive as holy (eg. Nathan Söderblom).

What role do Deva play in what buddhist define as sacred?
