Honestly it's extremely funny just how dense and blind anons in this thread (and on /lit/ and 4chan in general) are to their own biases.
>>23010319
>Maybe, but it isn't the right's fault
"There may be problems, but my tribe is responsible for none of them!" is straight up self-parody in this context.

>it's ironic that GRRM is instead parroting MSNBC talking points about democracy
For years I have been able to tell exactly what angle Fox News adopted and when, because anons who were having some kind of semi-intelligent back-and-forth suddenly switch gears and start preaching the exact same talking point and dismiss everyone arguing against it as leftist liberal globohomo trannies. I used to think very little of the englightened centrist types, but I realized I've seen very little of them lately and I actually kind of miss them because maybe their smarmy existence ultimately allowed people to find some common ground.

This isn't even about politics, I just feel like recently I've been running into anons utterly incapable of self-reflection on several boards and extending over several topics. It's not really even an echo chamber effect, because it manifests in their knee-jerk dismissal of any and all opposing arguments without truly engaging with their substance. I swear it wasn't this bad ten or twenty years ago. It may have started with (American) politics, but this kind of my way or the highway polarization seems to have seeped into every other aspect of our lives.

I love when people like you make comments like this; as soon as I see them, I can only imagine that they never voluntarily read a book without pictures. They only browse places like /lit/ to feed their narcissism and Illusory superiority while never having read anything that would change how they think or challenge their views.

a real intellectual isn't concerned with how others are learning, especially not by spending their days in the asshole of the internet berating others for not knowing Ancient Greek and thus reading classics criminally. please re-evaluate your life if you ever want to be taken seriously.

>not important
I don't deny its importance. I'm just asking for some honesty in not trying to read prophecies about Christ into places where it clearly doesn't belong. I saw some huy trying to count the number of times "God" appears in the Shema Israel prayer to prove the Trinity. This is basically what most Christians do when I ask them about the Old Testament. Same with pastors I know personally. It's literally and unironically making me have a crisis right now.

How do I learn to hold solid convictions? I've tried reading different books to educate myself on different subjects, but I always tend to agree with the book by the end of it, even if it contradicts what I read before. I feel like I have no critical thinking whatsoever; I am so easily swayed in one direction or to other that I've settled on apathy because I've grown wary that everyone is trying to manipulate me. Should I accept my fate as sheep and give up, or is this a natural part of the process of one's intellectual journey?

Pretty much this. God is loving and yet terrible suffering occurs. How do we reconcile this? I'm not sure we know how to. But if we put that aside for a moment, and just look at our actual situation, we realise something. Namely, that no suffering can ever deprive us of God Himself, who, after all, is all Goodness. In fact, it is through suffering that we come close to Him. None of this world will make sense until the next one. But we can rest assured, despite all the unanswered suffering, that Christ is with us as we pass through the dark.
