For legitimately depressing, and surreal literature, the kind that gives you not the joys of Halloween but of a odd disgust in the stomach. I recommend The Blind Owl, and Gustav Meyrink's The Golem.

Also a bit of a stretch but Steppenwolf is kind of disparaging IMO.
