Sup, /lit/?

What's the best stand-alone fantasy novel of all time?

Pic related. It's my nomination.

Alaizabel Cray because I loved it as a kid and still do.
Monsters created by the thoughts and fears of the people, a destroyed victorian London, a lovestory between a half-insane girl and a young hunter of these monsters, Jack The Ripper and a mysterious sect, what else can a child want?

How the fuck have I not heard about this? I fucking want this now!

Because you don't live in Germany or Australia, as far as I know the book is not very known in other countries.

This book is amazing.
Cyteen

But it is no longer standalone because recently a squeal came out after more than a decade. It still stands on its own. And in truth it was originally published as three short books so I guess it may not count anyway.

Not bad OP, but not the best of all time. I'd probably have to say this one.

Can't really think of a "best" off the top of my head.

I do second Cyteen, however. C.J. Cherryh writes a lot of good books.

Michael Swanwick, The Iron Dragon's Daughter. Has a sequel.
Kim Newman, Anno Dracula. Has a series.

The Wizard Knight is one book that TOR split to make more money.

Best Stand Alone Fantasy Novels:

-Little, Big by John Crowley
-The Land of Laughs by Jonathan Carroll
-The Book of Knights by Yves Meynard
-Anno Dracula by Kim Newman
-The Dragon Waiting by John M. Ford
-Replay by Ken Grimwood

The Gormenghast books are some of my favorite, absolutely moving to me. I read that if you like Gormenghast, to try Little, Big. I bought a copy but haven't been able to get into it. About 50 pages in a year or two ago, never continued. Is it worth finishing if I'm having trouble getting into it so far in? I love his use of language, it drips off the page, but I feel like it wasn't going anywhere. Please tell me I'm wrong.

Also, why aren't The Neverending Story, The Last Unicorn, or The Once and Future King on here?

>> No.1062987

I would nominate The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. A dystopian U.S.A where kids have to fight for their lives in an arena to keep the population from rebelling, and a clear paralell to the outsourcing and globalzation problems of the present.

Shut your whore mouth, it was one book too big to be published in one volume. When combined into one volume, it fits seamlessly together. It was written and conceived as one story. Live with it. It's not an ongoing series.

The Princess Bride
The Wind in the Willows
