The Gormenghast books are some of my favorite, absolutely moving to me. I read that if you like Gormenghast, to try Little, Big. I bought a copy but haven't been able to get into it. About 50 pages in a year or two ago, never continued. Is it worth finishing if I'm having trouble getting into it so far in? I love his use of language, it drips off the page, but I feel like it wasn't going anywhere. Please tell me I'm wrong.

Also, why aren't The Neverending Story, The Last Unicorn, or The Once and Future King on here?

I would nominate The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. A dystopian U.S.A where kids have to fight for their lives in an arena to keep the population from rebelling, and a clear paralell to the outsourcing and globalzation problems of the present.

Shut your whore mouth, it was one book too big to be published in one volume. When combined into one volume, it fits seamlessly together. It was written and conceived as one story. Live with it. It's not an ongoing series.
