Will this go down as a 20-21st Century LOTR? Or will it be glossed over in time and forgotten? If not asoiaf, what will go down in the history books in the 20-21st Century that can be compared to lotr if anything?

ASOIAF is going to go down as a disappointment if it remains unfinished. It will be remembered only for wasting its potential. I have no idea what the 21st century LOTR will be. It will probably be as different from current fantasy as LOTR was from the fantasy of its own day. The whole reason LOTR is remembered is that it so profoundly changed things for fantasy and science fiction.

It’s already been forgotten. Book of the new sun is the sci fi/fantasy that sees more discussion here, though I haven’t read it.

While Game of Thrones certainly won't be forgotten; the success of Tolkein's work simply cannot be surpassed. Not only was the sheer size and depth of Middle Earth never seen before at that point, but Lord of the Rings came out near the time of the counter culture movement in the west. Tolkein's writing was taken seriously by the youth of that time and was a unifying force that was cemented in pop culture. Of course GoT has fervorous fans, but it's simply not the same.

20th century is definitely LOTR.
But 21th is going a little too far, wait 81 years more, OP.

This is the book that will go down in history, but it probably won't receive widespread recognition until Wolfe dies, unfortunately. As for ASOIAF I advise you to look at the bestseller list from a hundred years ago, how many names do you recognize? That will be ASOIAF. It might have been a little more memorable if the last two books and the show weren't such an abortion.

I hardly believe something that popular at its time will become a classic. The few classic works that were popular at their time were read by middle class to upper class. GoT is (mostly watched) consumed even by analphabet plebian chad, thots and trend followers, just so they can socialize easier in an asocial degenerated era.

Nope. It's just too workmanlike.

Tolkien was a genuine man of letters. Martin is a hack.

Fuck no. It won't even be finished before Martin dies. It will be forgotten within 5 years of the shows final season.

Ursula K. LeGuin called Wolfe "our Melville," and I'm pretty sure BOTNS is going to pull a Moby-Dick. Wolfe is going to die, and then 25 years afterwards BOTNS is going to experience a major surge of critical and academic interest, and from then on out it will be widely known as a masterpiece.

The Horus Heresy series will go down as 21st Century LOTR, mainly because the last book won’t come out until 2099.
