Doom is a great game by any standards, but it's not a good work of art. I nominate Tetris as the best artwork the medium has to offer, but I wouldn't hold it up against Proust or anything.

Great games exist, great films exist, great books exist, but comparing them to each other is a disservice to every medium. Once again, you're making qualitative judgements about a whole medium, as if the form of a work somehow is more important than how said medium uses it.
Games can do things Proust can't, and movies can do things neither Doom nor Proust can, and so on. You just want to conside novels a more worthy medium than games because you think you're better than "gamers" because you read novels. I don't think videogames are without their charge of problem, but putting the medium in a inferior standard is the same as decrying movies because Uwe Boll exists or books because JK Rowling exists.
