When starting out with Christianity, is it better to read the most important chapters from all the books in the Bible first to understand the basics, and then to read them completely, or to read the Bible book by book?

I read a bit of Genesis, Exodus and some other books (in order) and now I want to read the book of John. Have I fucked up?

as long as there is any part of the Bible you haven't read, you don't know what is and what isn't in it

Read the easier books and passages first. As a primer I would recommend Genesis; Exodus 1-24, 32-35, 40; 1 and 2 Samuel; 2 Kings 25; the four gospels; and Acts. Those will give you an overview of the Biblical narrative from creation to the covenant with Abraham, to the covenant via Moses, to the founding of Israel, to the exile, then Jesus, his disciples, and Paul.

I read the Nt cover to cover and parts of the Ot (like Genesis, Job and some of the proverbs and psalms)
If I ever go back to it I'm going to go cover to cover
But yeah if I were you I'd start with the NT, at the very least with the gospels

"NO!"

That's a terrible way to read the Bible. It's not a novel, the books are arranged roughly according to genre. You can read pieces if you're just starting out.

You have not fucked up. It's better to get some context first and then do more thorough readings. That guy is an imbecile because he assumes one will only read the Bible once.

Is this list good for starters?

My plan was to read through these and then to do more in-depth readings along with catechisms and whatever else there is. Sorry if I sound ignorant, but I'm a former atheist and I'm just starting to look for God.

1. ONE STARTS IN CHRISTIANITY WITH A NOTION OF GOD.

2. IF WHAT YOU MEAN IS "STARTING WITH CHRISTIAN LITERATURE", I ADVISE THAT YOU START WITH CHRISTIAN LITERATURE, NOT WITH JUDEOCHRISTIAN LITERATURE, THEREFORE, DO NOT READ "THE BIBLE", RATHER, READ THE NAG HAMMADI TEXTS, THEN PROCEED WITH "PISTIS SOFIA", AFTER THOSE, PROCEED WITH THE CATHAR TREATISES, AND WITH THE MANICHAEAN TEXTS.

Read the gospels and then Acts and Romans, then re-read the gospels alot. Then you finish the NT and start the OT cover by cover.

Those look very good as a starter. There isn't one correct way to read the Bible, I wouldn't overly worry.
