Ok we're going to do a Man and Technics /lit/
reading group. This is intended as an announcement post for anyone interested.

The book itself is only about **50 pages**, so we'll be starting with the discussion very soon, most likely Saturday afternoon (10/13) a thread will be posted.

Because of how short it is, hopefully we can get lots of people involved, especially those not typically interested in Spengler.

>Man and Technology: A Contribution to a Philosophy of Life is a short book by Oswald Spengler, in which the author discusses a critique of technology and industrialism. It was published as Der Mensch und die Technik in Munich in 1931.

>The principal idea in the work is that many of the Western world's great achievements may soon become spectacles for our descendants to marvel at, as we do with the pyramids of Egypt or the baths of Rome.[1] Spengler especially pointed to the tendency of Western technology to spread to hostile "Colored races" which would then use the weapons against the West.[2] In Spengler's view, western culture will be destroyed from within by materialism, and destroyed by others through economic competition and warfare.

Here is the original:

Here's an English translation:

https://archive.org/details/ManTechnics-AContributionToAPhilosophyOfLife193253/page/n3N

The book is a standalone work, but a basic knowledge of Spengler's previous works and his general philosophy of history is recommended, which you can find on Wikipedia. Or better yet, read his Der Untergang Des Abendlandes, The Decline of the West.

Where does he say this? I'm about 3/4s of the way through and I haven't found any conclusions even remotely like this.

From what I've read, he thinks the west has made a Faustian bargain by allowing its technics to solve the big problems (i.e. allowing science to replace religion) and even admits that the "Faustian" European Culture is probably not the last (pp 78), saying another culture may arise between the Vistula and the Amur (ie Eastern Europe, Middle East, East Asia).

Can you point to a page number where he comes to a conclusion like this? Or are you referring to some other text where he says this?

For Spengler, art and aesthetics are something created in the Culture stage of a civilization, when spiritual creativity, religiousness, and inner life are at their zenith. The Culture stage ends when the traditional state-form is overthrown in revolution and the politics of money comes to dominate. For us, obviously, this refers to the Revolutions of 1776 and 1786 as well as the Wars of Napoleon. When the Ancien Regime is overthrown in favor of money, the city conquers the rural and Culture becomes Civilization. Notice how the art of the 19th and 20th centuries is characterized by steadily deconstructing the aesthetics the previous 1000 years of Culture had been building upon. Civilization does not create new art, it can only deconstruct, revive, and borrow. This is because Civilization lacks inner form, it is entirely material. It does not create from the inside, it dominates the outside, expanding into an Imperium until it collapses under its own weight and is overtaken by youthful barbarians.

I always thought that Romanticism was the zenith of Western culture, do you think it's actually just reproduction, borrowing, and imitation? I think it's still fairly original in the sense that it can be thought of as a direct reaction to the advent of technics and the beginning of the transition into civilization stage.

Civilization starts with the 20th century I think, and becomes widely apparent it has arrived with the Great War. There's too much sincere art and culture to discount in the 19th, but really it's almost all gone after WW1, certainly WW2.

Obviously there's no hard dividing line when talking about this sort of stuff. That said, Spengler considers Napoleonism the last major 'event' marking the end of Culture and the beginning of Civilization. It coincides with revolutions replacing traditional, spiritually-based state-forms with money-motivated mass politics characterized by democracy and demagoguery. The Classical analogy for this is Alexander's Napoleonism and the polis state-form being replaced with political Hellenism. Wars of Annihilation like the World Wars are considered firmly within the Civilizational period rather than a signal of the beginning of Civlization.

Spengler actually explicitly talks about art movements like Romanticism and Classicism. He considers them to art what fascism is to politics: inauthentic attempts at appealing to and mobilizing the masses. Take Wagner, for instance. He's not creating his own stories, mythology, settings so much as he's just rehashing old Germanic myths in a grand way that everyone in the Civilization can appreciate. It's almost exactly what Disney's done, admittedly in a more epic fashion than Disney. If Culture is the creative ascent and Civilization the exhaustive decline, the Napoleon-figure is the peak.

fair point, but i'm not the one in charge. when a decision has been made to do something at an agreed upon point in time, the decision to change that point in time shouldn't fall to newcomers. its an ironic thing to suggest when we're talking about discussing material by someone who believes the west is in decline, what with the US (and i assume other western euro countries as well, but i don't really know about their politics because, frankly, they're irrelevant europoors) being so eager to allow shitskin immigrants (even illegals) with no connection to the country, aside from the fact that they just showed up here, have their voices heard via the ballot box.
