Tell me about Spengler.
What is he all about ?

>> No.12257428

he's prescient, insightful, a great cultural historian, a polymath, and his Decline will probably change ur world-outlook

>> No.12257481

some author I haven't read and probably never will because his books aren't being published anymore and I refuse to read them in anglospeak

I have nothing against killing animals for sustenance, but there has always been something disturbing about uncivilized peoples hunting and eating primates. The similarity between the human and the monkey is uncanny. It is far too easy to empathize with their every movement, from the rotation of the arms to the flexing of the fingers to the turning of their heads and blinking of their eyes. Unlike fish and insects and birds and small mammals, where the evolutionary tree is enough divided to provide a separation of both shape and intellect, the ape is shockingly close and I've been unable to stop from arising within me an oddly poignant affinity upon seeing them, despite knowing how very simple they truly are.

I'll go to bed now.

To be fair, he also did some predictions which didn't come true, like that the US would break up along ethno-racial lines following the Great Depression.

However, that changes when you consider that race-related issues have been at the centre of American politics for about 60 years now...

So yeah, the guy didn't fuck around. Totally one of my favorite german authors (along with his buddy Jünger)

old cracka does some armchair history about "muh cycles muthafucka" and comes to the conclusion that the prideful thing to do is to wallow in cynical pessimism, believing all is lost

>> No.12259116

Subject too obscure to be bait so how the fuck can you so overtly misread his philosophy?

Spengler is a fatalist. Spengler is a pessimist. Spengler is not a fucking nihilist. He's the farthest thing from a nihilist. Mongrels like you probably read Nietzsche and think he's a nihilist too. But Spengler is completely explicit about it too. One of the central premises of his entire philosophy of history, man, and life, is that meaning is to be found in the ultimately futile battle against death and Nature. The high cultures themselves arose out of a fear of death -- a fear which they overcome with expressions of transcendent meaning.

>Faced as we are with this destiny, there is only one world-outlook that is worthy of us, that which has already been mentioned as the Choice of Achilles -- better a short life, full of deeds and glory, than a long life without content.

>We are born into this time and must bravely follow the path to the destined end. There is no other way. Our duty is to hold on to the lost position, without hope, without rescue, like that Roman soldier whose bones were found in front of a door in Pompeii, who, during the eruption of Vesuvius, died at his post because they forgot to relieve him. That is greatness. That is what it means to be a thoroughbred. The honorable end is the one thing that can not be taken from a man.

I would try to contact the seller or otherwise find images of it online (maybe by contacting another seller with the same version) before buying... Better that than taking a chance with an ugly or cheap or fake edition. Actually when I google that image I get "Kindle edition" so that might just be a placeholder. Be careful. Make sure you see what you're getting.

The old knopf editions referenced above are pretty nice. I have this big blue 2-in-1 volume from them which still has the huge multi-page foldout tables (pic related), that I was lucky enough to get at Powell's in Chicago for $5.
