There are several reasons:

1. A desire to fit in with board meme culture

2. A Christian reading of modernity inspired by, perhaps, such figures as GK Chesterton, Alasdair Macintyre, maybe even Thomas Merton or to a lesser extent traditionalists like Guenon. Basically a kind of post-liberal or post-ideological shift thats been carefully thought out and no longer sees modernity as viable.

3. A recognition of the strong Catholic presence in the western canon, including figures like Aquinas and Augustine. [And for this same reason you have those who insist on Orthodox Christianity]. Catholics are "patrician as fuck lmao" or something like that.

4. A stupid /pol/ hobgoblin which rudely points to what seems an obvious antithesis to the excesses of social liberalism ("""family values""" as opposed to promiscuity and LGBT ). These are the worst. They have no sincere interest in the Gospels or in prayer, and if they attend church they do so primarily as political partisans.

also the trad LARPy 'christians' that you refer to in the alt right (or whatever else they call themselves now) are about as good of christians and catholics as the mafia or mexican gangs are.

>implying proof of any kind is possible at all
Yeah, this is simply human arrogance; embrace Socratic ignorance as the only position an honest man can take and you're in a position to understand that "the just shall live by faith."
>>12423152
Because, despite the impossibility of proof, God's supernatural self-revelation is able to truly convince the honest man beyond his capacity to doubt: this is the true gnosis. The Gnostics understood Christianity correctly, in that there is such an enlightenment or gnosis to be had, but they misunderstood its content as that garbage about the demiurge and matter and whatnot. The true gnosis is simple certainty of Christ's Godhood bestowed by special revelation, see Matthew 16:15-17.

The God of the scholastics, with all his metaphysical properties, is not the same god as Zeus. One could argue he is not the same god as YHWH or Jesus, but thats another matter.

The monotheistic god of rabbinic judaism, and classical Islam, and medieval Christian scholastics, has a very distinct and particular form. I think others developed the same/similar idea of God in ancient Greece and India and probably elsewhere.

This is the god who answers the question "why are there things which exist instead of nothing" and who is approached by such descriptions as "the creator, outside and beyond all space and time, the One of whom being is a manifestation, the transcendent" etc.

One thing that has been really refreshing among certain circles of Catholics, including in the United States, has been a gradual recognition that the American "project" of absolute individual liberty and extreme devotion to the making of money is incompatible with genuine Roman Catholicism. The Catholic Church and the United States are like oil and water. Not every Catholic has realized this yet, but many have. They are competing powers and only one of them will survive, in the end.

It was on point. Anyone who is really dedicated to the United States, not as as country but as an idea, is right to be suspicious of the Catholic Church. The Church has no tolerance for the ideas that undergird this country. In fact, did you know that there's a heresy specifically named after the United States?

My question is why does God matter? Can't we simply love eachother, and also pursue universal spiritualism, without the need to believe in something for which we will always end up forming our own constructs for? A homophobe's God will hate gays, a rich man's God will cherish wealth, and so on. God becomes a construct of the believer's mind, wherein their positions now seem propped up by a "higher authority". It's a dangerous line to tread. Even if you take scripture as authentically divine, no two individuals interpret scriptures the same, again leaving a fracturing of beliefs on a single entity. If there is a God, and this God for whatever reason NEEDS worship from humans, then they have done the most terrible of jobs in achieving this, by not simply writing the books themselves and ensuring they were given to the whole world at once, instead allowing multitudes of men to pen down what are supposed to be taken as their words, and not even doing this for all people of all places, but scattering the process out through time, space, and culture in such a way that one could never even determine which are genuine and which aren't - and of what among the genuine is genuinely divine and what of it is the error of men.

Overall, I think theism has too many inherent holes, which you can see just looking at the past few thousands of years of history. We should embrace spirituality, but not worry about a being we have neither proof, grasp or certain, indisputable knowledge regarding. What harm would be done if everyone were extremely moral to one another, and sought spiritual transcendence in their lives, but didn't worry about any or the other "God"?

Heed the pasta
yeah, I’m a Christian, you got a problem with that? I used to be a sinner like you but 2 years ago I found GOD. In my teens I would laugh at creationists; I would always tell my grandma that I didn’t want to go to mass; I was agnostic but not like r/Atheism. But when I GREW UP and became a man, I realised I needed to put childish things away (1 Corinthians 13:11). Why is that? Because I realized that we need Christianity to SAVE THE WEST. After I voted Trump in the 2016 election I decided to go to church again. I knew that I would find a QT pure Christian GF who I could lose my virginity to (I haven’t lost it yet because I’m saving myself for marriage, like God intended). I haven’t found her yet, but like Job I will pray and have faith in God. Then I saw Jordan Peterson talking about Christianity and I was hooked! (I don’t like him anymore though, he’s a fake Christian). I watched all his videos on the bible and realised how God reveals himself in many ways. I was on /pol/ (came from r/The_Donald during the election but I hate redditors now) Christian General and I saw /lit/ chart which had The Bible and I KNEW I found my people. Every day I see THE WEST falling because we gave up our FAITH. Well, the new Christian intellectuals are coming; We are the sons of the Crusaders and we shall not recoil before the sons of Voltaire! (Candide was shit, so is Nietzsche (haven’t read either of them)). /lit/ introduced me to Kierkegaard and I became a KNIGHT OF FAITH, so now I know that I just gotta believe and that’s TRUE bravery. I read DANTE and DOSTOEVSKY and I saw the beauty of God and true art. I’m a proud Catholic (Protestants are heretics) but I hate Pope Francis, he’s a heretic and isn’t MY Pope. /lit/ is a Christian board, and I know that if I just keep recommending the Bible, telling people to go to church, and making threads about how great God is, I will finally be able to sincerely believe in God and distract myself from the gnawing feeling that I’m a fraud. Faith ain’t easy.
