Finally biting the bullet, lads. Not even done with the transcendental aesthetic yet. Kant sucks at writing but he had a hell of a mind.

Hands down, this is the most comprehensive and the most difficult book on poetics that I've ever read. The author's turned poetics into a strict science, and it's no wonder why even my professors won't touch it with a 10-foot pole.

Has anyone who's more advanced in poetry than me given this book a try? I'm relatively new to the scene, so I don't know if this book is actually worth it or not. Some chapters and passages are great in terms of explaining the subject matter, but some others are just totally incomprehensible and/or useless/redundant. This book is pretty much as impractical as you can get, but I still love it, nonetheless.

The book's still being printed by a well-reputed press, so I doubt that it's up for grabs anywhere. Downloads pop up on Medium sometimes, but they get pruned almost immediately.

I'm that guy you're replying to, and I'd admit that it really isn't worth shelling out $20 for nor scouring the internet for. There are much better and more accessible guides out there.

Ah, that sucks. The summary online was alluring, and to be honest describing it as "the most comprehensive and the most difficult book on poetics I've ever read" made it all the more interesting to me. So you don't enjoy it at all?

You can go on Amazon's listing of the book, and it should let you look inside and read a few pages. If you're really as interested as you say you are, then I would recommend it, definitely. I enjoy the book a lot; it's just that it wasn't at all what I expected, so it took me a while to get used to the way she explained things.

After reading a few pages, please, come back and let me know if you found it difficult to read or to get through. I want to know if I'm actually just retarded. Thanks, Anon.

All right well I did what you asked and went through the introduction, I think it's pretty legible. I think what she has to say about sonnets is reductionist, and doesn't apply to French poetry, but that's besides the point. Maybe it does become more difficult to read beyond the intro, though?

It starts to pick up after chapter two. The intro is just a quick refresher on things that people who would even think of buying this book should already know.

The chapters on rhetoric, meter, and rhyme are great, though. If you're more of a strategist who plans the ever-loving shit out of your poems, you'll really like this book. Now that I think about it, most of the people I know who dismissed this book were the type to post their poetry on instagram. Their poetry focuses more on coming off poetic, but not being poetic. I'm the type who plans a single poem for weeks using diagrams and countless pages of notes. That's probably why I like this book so much.

I got a good 30 pages in before I put it down, but that's also because I hadn't read pynchon before. There's a pynchon chart that says you shouldn't read vineland until you've read everything else and you are such an extreme fan that you insist on reading everything of his. I've since read lot 49 and V and I can't believe they're from the same author.
