nietzsche wasn't a nihilist, but nihilism is a problem for nietzsche's perspectivism. if there's no god or objective truth, we run the risk of growing nihilistic. nietzsche was more of a proto-existentialist, and was indeed a major influence on heidegger and the existentialists.

Leftism rarely believes in the individual as more than a means to an end. The Party is where it's at, you see. There are plenty of beliefs and narratives that believe in progress and individual. Campbell and the spiritualists would be more in your alley. Progress is defined by the goal, so as long as you don't believe in a bad end for the world and its processes, you can safely believe in progressions. Self-improvement was an important aspect of the National Socialist doctrine.

As a humble brainlet, I have a few questions. What would define this departure from materialism and consumerism in this modern day, as OP described? Is it just an abstinence from the consumer market on a whole or is it more a frame of mind in which you don't let material possessions, status and the ego cloud your mind and corrupt you?

Also, to what extent would this affect the interests and hobbies that one might have? Wanting the latest and greatest smartphone for it's gaudiness would definitely fall under this vice but what of others? If one liked video games for example, not as a mindless, brain rotting time suck but because they genuinely find enjoyment in the escapism that it presents, would that still be materialistic, as it exists in the form of possessions and as such needs to be bought?
I know that these might be very naive and idiotic questions but I'd just like to ask and hear others opinions on the matter and learn and be informed by them.

For one, materialist believe goes in the direction that everything (e.g. desire and the essence of being human) can be explained in scientific terms and quantity (e.g. that handling of possessions determine economy and that economy dictates societal evolution).

If you explain your desire to play video games with Freudian terms and you describe your relation in a modernist, rational (even evo-psychological) fashion ... then it doesn't break with a materialist view.

Materialism is absolutely the normal mindset today.
One in which e.g. "honor" - as an honest virtue, not as a strategic tool for regulating status - seems "stupid".

Do any of you clowns seriously think that no one in the history of mankind has thought any of this through? Are you actually that arrogant to think that after 2000 years of cutting edge thinking and reasoning, some anonymous retard like you would figure out one of the biggest questions that bothers the whole of humanity? Are you actually that arrogant to think that your run of the mill bullshit philosophy of "we all just gotta be One duuuude, materialism sux maaaan" is somehow in any way innovative and getting us in any way closer towards a valid solution to any human problem whatsoever?

Yup, I'm actually more enlightened than the average human. I might not be on the same level as the best philosophers since Ancient Greece but definitely better than 0.01% global population. Once you stop being materialist then you are closer to a valid solution. Materialism is a sign that you are still a animalistic subhuman since only an animal could present such traits. See monkeys and ravens for an instance. The average human is no better than them.

Of course not, because asking for evidence and having to actually justify what you believe in is 'muh materialism' as well. How conveniently unfalsifiable.

But yeah, it's other people that are really the problem, not you and your bullshit. You just gotta grow up maaaan

All that "counts" is what happens. Revelations may indeed be "induced" by drugs, especially psychedelics, because they bring the imbiber to a new peak. Climb a new mountain and you LITERALLY get a new perspective on where you were before. The thing is is that the experience is wholly personal - but also paradoxically suggesting at the interwoven connections between everything. The experience may feel revelatory for the imbiber but their communication or interpretation of the experience always has trouble carrying that revelation out because it is the self that plasters onto the memory words as repeated thoughts that totalize and "explain" what happened - the ego is immeasurably resilient and for good reason (it doesn't want to die), but it is in this retaking the ego performs in "understanding" what happened that locks our ability to communicate what happened because what happened exposure to a chaos that language cannot capture - there is literally too much to tell but if the ego responds furiously enough, some people might go insane rambling on about their revelation, trying to box it in, wondering why people don't get what they're talking about. It is no weakness on the persons part except the inherent weakness in their constitution - if you don't have a way of thinking about your new crazy experience positively, or you hold onto the idea that PEOPLE MUST KNOW AND THE EXPERIENCE WAS THIS SPECIFIC THING, THIS, THIS IS IT, IVE FINALLY GOT IT, IVE FINALLY GOT IT

you've never got it

The impossibility if explaining or sharing that ‘experience’ is what bugs me. I wish I could make people ‘see it’. But it is just not possible to convey with language, so I usually don’t try to talk to other people about it, because I know I’ll sound like a stereotypical lunatic, which I sometimes fear I have really become. But I know what I experienced, but I also know if someone tried to explain this to me before I had this experience myself I would have labeled that person as a rambling madman. So I know how impossible it is to convey ‘it’ to others

It really helped me later to read Plotinus and Spinoza, I feel like they too ‘saw it’ and are better than me in translating that experience into words, but language ist still severely lacking.

yeah especially so, fuck it most philosophy/religion feels like someone going crazy trying to channel the infinite into the finite and managing snippets, ideas congeal out of larger structures intended to carry or suggest at the real complexity, but the position of "writing something" carries its own paradoxical ends, my words are bound by time, what I can tell you is bound by what I can think and when and where I can think it - so I usually just ramble and try and gamble on people "getting" whatever part of the joke that they can. Language is severely lacking but it is part of our toolset nonetheless. Especially in the nowdays you have to cut through endless varieties, vine after vine of language plasticity to get someone to realize what the fucks happening when language is happening. You and I have experiences and thought histories that gear us towards being able to communicate right here - but some people you are literally going to have to convince them not to kill you first, figurativley or literally lol.
