What's /lit/'s opinion on the Kindle and the Nook and electronic reading devices? I'm thinking about buying one this December for myself. It seems cheaper than buying loads of books each year, but it also doesn't give me the pleasure of holding to book in my hand. Plus, it wouldn't have that new book smell, and turning that first page and the page after that and the page after that. And I would never have a personal copy of a book. Plus, what if the Kindle does not have a book that I want to read? I'm conflicted here, /lit/. I don't want to spend $140 on something that isn't what I want. Does anyone have one of these devices? What do you think of it?

You're not *really* going to buy more than one or two books for that thing, are you?

Pic related.

>> No.1326182

never. i refuse to pay for "virtual" goods.
they do the same licencing shit that you get with other virtual goods and services. last i heard, you can only download your amazon ebooks a few times before you need to repurchase your licence.
if you find books to be too expensive then buy second hand. op shops are god tier.

>PLEASURE OF HOLDING A BOOK
> SCENT OF A NEW BOOK

STOP BEING SO EMOTIONALLY ATTACHED TO YOUR BOOKS. YOU READ THEM FOR THE TEXT. IF YOU WANT TO READ THEM ON A KINDLE THEN BUY A FUCKING KINDLE. IF YOU DONT WANT TO GIVE UP THE FEEL OF PAPER BOOKS THEN DONT BUY A KINDLE

>I WOULD NEVER HAVE A PERSONAL COPY OF A BOOK

IF YOU REALLY LIKED THE BOOK THEN BUY A PAPER COPY. IT IS NOT THAT HARD.

THINK ABOUT IT THIS WAY: NOW YOU HAVE MORE OF A REASON TO BE PICKY ABOUT THE PAPER BOOKS YOU BUY SO YOUR BOOK COLLECTION WILL BE BETTER

>KINDLE NOT HAVING BOOK

THEN BUY THE PAPER VERSION. PROBLEM SOLVED.

ALSO PIRATE BOOKS.

My boyfriend got me a Nook Color for Christmas. It's absolutely awesome.

I had a lot of the same worries you do with getting an ereader, but after using it for a few days, they've completely gone away. It's comfortable to hold, I can adjust the backlight so there's no eye strain, and I can get almost anything I want on it in a matter of minutes. I love how books feel and smell, but for me at least, it seems the convenience of having an ereader outweighs missing out on those things. And it's cool that I can stream Pandora right from it and that I can take a break from reading to do a crossword or surf the web for a bit.

>nook color

you're both idiots. The point of an e-reader is that there is no backlit screen or anything -- the eink screen is like that of a real book.

You just got an ipad lite. Enjoy your aids.

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get an e-reader soon (probably a Nook, need to read some more reviews on the Nooks and Kindles). I'm a huge literary nerd; same as you I love the feel of a paper book in my hand. However, when I'm at work, if I'm in the middle of reading a huge fucking book (700-1000 page, fuckin' tombs, y'know) I don't want to lug that to work and look like a freak with that 20 page thing on my counter. Don't want to have to carry that out on the run when I have to wait somewhere either. Whatever e-reader I get is gonna be the same equivalent of someone who gets a portable game system (PSP) but prefers using their real system at home (PS3) with their nice TV and cozy couch.

I'm still gonna buy books, especially my favorites and ones I want to be able to curl up on the couch with and feel the paper slip through my fingers... but there's no reason, if you have the money, to not have a comfortable, portable, mini-library.

I got a nook last week. I was afraid I wouldn't like it because I have so many used books yet to read.

However, after one week I am already enjoying it. I can sit there and read the thick paperback in my room, or I can take the nook with me and read it wherever I want.

I am still only reading the books I already own so that I don't feel like my library is lacking anything great. But yeah, definitely worth my $100.

Best fucking thing ever. I have a Sony PRS-505 and it's just amazing. Pretty much any book I can think of is easily downloaded and put on the reader, and if it's in .epub format, it looks great too. Battery last for-fucking-ever, and it's just easy to hold and read. God damn amazing.

Few things guise,

>owning a Kindle does not stop you from buying books
>you can get all your ebooks for free from gutenberg & #bookz
>paying £100+ for an lcd e-reader is fucking retarded
>Kindle is both superior to a Nook in hardware and software since the Nook developers are whipped code-monkeys who just dont give a fuck. Or amateurs ('ARE U FUCKING PROFESSIONAL?')
>PSPs are cancer unless you can get custom firmware & really, really enjoy psp, ps1 & old school games
>PS3 is cancer unless you are desperate to play certain exclusives
>Sony reader is better than a kindle but more expensive

>> No.1327218

What advantages does the sony reader have over the Kindle? I know there's no shitty amazon DRM on the sony, but what else?

>> No.1327232

touchscreen. possibly better battery life & Sony usually build their shit to last.

I'm not to sure on the last two things since they're still too expensive for something to read books with imo.

>> No.1327238

But if you think its too expensive already, isn't the touchscreen another disadvantage? I mean why add something like that to something meant only for reading books? Buttons work just as well.

yeah im not sure whats that much better about the non touchscreen version of the sony reader. its expensive but at least they seem to have learned not to do the DRM shit after the PSP & PS3.

I dunno dude. While the eye strain could be a problem, I never had a problem reading my iPad in the dark while laying in bed.

Dropped the brightness to pretty much nothing and I never ended up with pain in my eyes like I sometimes get from from my comp monitor.

But yeah, e-ink is an orgasm for my eyes. I have trouble convincing myself the screen is real.

The Nook Color is heavy. The Kindle 3 -- I could throw that mother like a frisbee for my fake dog to catch.

Eye strain is the only important thing in this argument over what is best, and the Kindle doesn't give any.

I've picked one up... imo, nook colors aren't very heavy for what's in them, and they're much ligher than iPads. They are certainly heavier than a normal nook or a Kindle, though.

>> No.1327843

I got a sony daily edition

i really love it, best purchase i ever made, and in my opinion its one of the better readers around, a nice size, leather cover over it (synthetic leather but still nice), and its dark, about the size of a paperback, plus the colouring of the screen is very similar to a book.

It doesnt have any internal lighting so you need to read it in light, which i think also ads to it, it feels just like a real book to me. I've read about a dozen books on it already since i got it last month.
