I think that women have a more pragmatic approach to presenting themselves. The only people who will find this sort of pictures unappealing are autists online while everyone else will just think that this girl likes to read or ignores the background completely. Well, a fundamental part of identity is recognition. To put it simply to be something you have to be recognised by others as such thing. There's many other ways (old as life itself) to do that other than social media.
When people talk about the vanity of others that itself is an exercise of vanity as they're resorting to some kind of 'authenticity' where they incarnate something so profoundly that they don't need to show it off. And that's exactly what they're doing in that same gesture.

But even when the curation of identity is based in what you might say to be 'reality', the search for recognition through various means doesn't actually dissapear. i.e. through the publication of an essay. One might appear to be what one 'really' is but is anyway performing (in a theatrical sense) that 'reality'.

It's not to prove that they're smart, it's to attract other people with similar interests. You use a medium to form a connection. Everyone does it. It's the equivalent of a comic convention or of a damn bar. The bar is the medium that gives you the opportunity to pick up girls and some people call that confidence, or courage, but it's the environment that does 90% of the work. Why do you think people use social media. Saying "I like you" is one click away. An algorithm does it for you. I would argue that people use it because they don't have a developed personal philosophy regarding that topic so they pick what's convenient as a filler.
