I want to do literature at university and I'm currently working on my personal statement.
I was wondering if it was worth briefly mentioning the fact that I am Christian, and talking about how my familiarity with the Bible helps me understand certain references in texts?

Yes, just make it clear that you believe this because the foundation of hermeneutics was in religious exegesis.

Be /very careful/ about how you work in any sort of personal religious conviction that wouldn't place you in a defined minority category when applying to a school. I would probably only mention it if your area of study made it /particularly/ relevant.

Ok, thanks. I don't want to make a big thing of it because I don't want it to look like I'm trying too hard to fit it in or anything. I'll see how it looks in the finished statement.

Are you applying to Liberty University?

Unless, y'know, it's a Christian school. Then you should totally Bible it up.

Depends on the school. Most Christian universities aren't too concerned with your personal religiosity. The staunchly conservative ones don't have large grad programs, anyhow.

I just realized this person is probably talking about applying to undergrad. In that case, it probably doesn't matter as much, but you should be concerned with crafting a well–written statement over all else.

No, I'm not.
>>1360602
It's not a Christian school.
>>1360632
Yeah, I'm hoping to be an undergraduate.

The more I think about it the more I don't like the idea, I just felt maybe an understanding of religious reference could give me a bit of an edge.

Hey OP. I remember having the same issue. I did mention it, not as in "I'm a christian" more, as in "My involvement with the chirch has yadda yadda...". Those weren't my exact words you understand, but I kind of dropped it in on the way to saying something else relevant to my application. O would definitely tie it in to your study of texts somehow.
I also mentioned working in church youth groups/ working with young people. some old bullshit

What's gonna give you an edge is being able to write a good statement. It doesn't matter what it says as much as how you say it. Avoid controversy and just sail for decent prose.

Even kids from good schools with high SAT scores can't seem to write anymore.

My theory:

We're becoming a written culture again, but our writing is in the form of Facebook statuses, emails, forum comments, Twitter updates, etc. where it takes the form of something like speech. This is terrible for long–form prose, but we're used to seeing it so it comes off as normal.

Oh hey, thanks!

If it fits in, it fits in! If not, I won't try and force it in somehow. And I'll be subtle about it.

You should only really use a colon after a complete phrase.

Thank you. I've noticed that all my friends statements are quite technical with lots of fancy words, not at all interesting to read or anything. With mine, I just want to make sure it flows and is clear.
